Ezekiel means "God is strong" or "God makes strong."

Ezekiel received his call to prophetic work inthe year approximatel 593 B.C. Ezekiel prophesied from his exile in Babylon. He prophesied concerning the reason for the fall of Israel and Israel's hope for the future. Ezekiel was a priest. He was one of many thousands of Jews who were taken captive to Babylon in the year 597 B.C.

The Lord called Ezekiel to give his prophecy to the rebellious Jews in exile in Babylon. In the years estimated between 592 B.C. and 585 B.C. Ezekiel prophesied Jerusalem's fall (1-24), and God's judgement on other nations (25-32) and God's future plans for Israel (33-39).

"The central idea of Ezekiel's theology is his conception of God as spiritual, powerful, but beyond everthing as 'holy.'' The Abingdon Bible Commentary Abingdon Press, 1929.
